Who We Really Are

This is what people think of when they hear the word "nerd." Granted, this is a nerd but not all nerds look like this. A nerd is someone who focuses on their studies, watches scifi films, plays video game, and reads comic books. But you might say "hey i do that too, but i'm not a nerd." That's because to a full blown nerd, you need to be obsessive and stand behind your comic books and scifi films. So learning the Klingon language or knowing all the ships in Star Wars is what qualifies you as a full blown nerd. But this still does not answer our clothing style. For the most part, those of who wear glasses is because we actually do need them. Why is glasses associated with being a nerd? Well believe it or not, people with glasses were and still get picked on and bullied through school. This lead us to find comfort in other things, like or studies and comic books.

This is the wannabe nerd. It is this crazy new fashion that is based on what us nerds look like and wear all the time. The same reasons we were made fun all our lives is now becoming the new look for people. Some of these wannabe nerds are also the very same bullies who treated you like dirt through school. Not mention, most of these wannabe nerd do not know a thing about most of the nerdy things out there. Now I'm not here to judge everybody I see wearing glasses as either a wannabe nerd or just a nerd. This is just something I feel strongly about.

This is the classical redneck. To be honest, these are the kind of guys who would make fun of me when I was in grade school. This is largely due their lack of knowledge and their passion for comic books or other scifi films I was into. Rednecks are depicted like this because of the majority having a strong conservative values and fear change. Because of this, they are ignorant to new ideas and technology or anything that is not familiar to them personally.

Our Digital World

There comes a time in every nerd's life when they make their pilgrimage to their Mecca known as ComicCon. ComicCon is a place where comic book fans, tv show/movie goers, and gamers go to enjoy all the new upcoming developments. Meeting favorite celebrities and getting sneak peaks to new games and movies coming out are always too be looked forward to. There are many panels that go on during the convention that relate to the genres given. Among them, there are panels dedicated to new technology being developed that will send our culture further into a more digital age.

Lets not forget of the robot wars that takes place at each of the cons. To show man's prowess in technology, we built machines from scratch and compete them with other machines. In this day and age, man have become so tech savvy that our form of entertainment is building and fighting robots.

The future of our digital landscape may some day look a lot like the movie "Real Steel" where robots have replaced organic human beings. Just imagine of all the new and exciting ideas that could come from these new developments. Boxers would not have to take the hits themselves but rather control the moves through a gaming controller. This really is not too far fetched considering the way our generations are going, they will be more use to gaming than actually physically fighting. Regardless of what the future brings, we can all safely assume that technology will be apart of our daily lives.

As a side note, I am planning on going to the ComicCon in San Diego this July and I am thoroughly excited!!! From the picture, you can see me in the dirty stormtrooper armor in which I troop in at different conventions. Showing off my artwork of prop building, is a large part of why I attend conventions.

Media Literacy

Hello fellow viewers!
So today I want to to discuss media literacy and the meaning behind this form of literacy. What better way to explain media literacy than writing about it on a blog! If I asked you what literacy meant to you, you would probably respond by saying it is the process of reading and writing. But what if I asked what media literacy meant? Well it simply means and expansion from what we already know to understand, access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate with the new technology today.
The media has a major influence over everyone in today’s society. Thus it is vitally important that media literacy is taught to students in schools. Media literacy involves the interpretation of many verbal and visual images that we take in daily from television, newspapers, computers, magazines and varies other forms of media and advertising. As we progress into the future more and more forms of literacy will evolve but they will always revolve around writing and reading.

Hello Everyone! I look forward to learning with all of you. As you can see, I am huge nerd! Particularly  for Star Wars. I am a Com major in Digital Film and Video and I have just entered into my sophomore year. I plan to go on and work for Turner Broadcasting and eventually Lucasarts. Some of my favorite hobbies are prop building and of course, film making. I have put together my own stormtrooper costume along with other movie props. To add to my nerdyness, I also work for Best Buy as a sales associate, so come and say "Hi" some time.
